Ahead of the release of their new album In Our Heads, Hot Chip stopped by Zane Lowe’s BBC Radio 1 show. There—mashed into their performance of album “Look At Where We Are,” the band got their Prince on, covering creepy dance floor classic, “If I Was Your Girlfriend.”
“Waiting” by The Ropers // Sunbathe 7” (1992)
I first heard this song years ago and never knew who sang it, all I remember is it being on a mixtape with a picture in place of a tracklist. Today, I look on Slumberland’s excellent Soundcloud page and hit play on the recent uploads and my brain nearly exploded upon hearing those initial chords. It was that song from the mixtape all those years back, sounding as perfect as it did back then. According to Slumberland, The Ropers were a DC-area shoegaze pop band that had a thing for The Byrds as well as contemporaries like Ride and Pale Saints. That sounds about right. Those gorgeous melodies and swirling guitars are as perfect tonight as they were back then. I hadn’t given this song much thought over the past couple of years, but I’m glad to have found my way back to it before I forgot completely. Highest recommendation. Absolutely incredible!
